SEO definitely gets a bad name, doesn’t it? It is one of those things many people claim to know about and there is no way to fully prove it out so people can charge what they want, do the minimum, and then blame it on your project/service/ or in this case your musical project when they fail to deliver. Although SEO is amazingly important and it is getting easier to do by yourself if you do your website using say WordPress or a similar CMS. On these types of CMS’ there are plugins that can be installed that not only give you places to insert your keywords, tags, and other needed information for SEO but they provide tips and suggestions to improve upon it especially if you get on their paid versions of these plugins.

The internet loves content and many forms of it and if the internet doesn’t get fed the way it wants to it’ll attempt to downgrade you where your content or website just ranks lower which is bad for business.

So you have to be good to your business and get savvy on SEO best practices. As much as I like to write these blog entries, for example, I also make sure the language I use is how other people speak and the titles and tags I use are trending or are how people are searching on Google about the said topic. So if you are posting on Instagram before you just post with random hashtags see what hashtags are relevant to you and your brand and also make sure you just aren’t using a hashtag that is popular just to get involved in the mass population of that trending topic. I believe this is bad form as you should aim for an organic climb so your numbers are your numbers as fluff is bad. If you don’t have a blog section on your website then set one up as this is the best way to drum up original content. Make sure to write one blog post if you are strapped for time at least once a week, if this is your profession then post two times a week. Then SEO the content. Make the title keyword driven, list the keyword you are going after in those areas, make the URL of the post easy and relatable to the subject you are writing about, and ensure your tags are relevant as well. Write a meta description for the post as well and be sure to have the excerpt filled out. You should try as hard as possible to have great original photos if you can help it but you can use websites like unsplash.com for stock photos. Do not just use random photos you find on the internet thinking someone won’t come after you for compensation. Then since you created this content you might as well get the most out of it. If there is an option to post a video or an audio clip turn that post into an audio/video version as well. If the content created was a video then get the transcript of that video in the blog post. This makes it so no matter how people stumble upon your content they can consume it in the way they want to consume it. Then get your content in other places that all point back to your website. So if you post video blogs on your website then also post those videos on YouTube and on other social platforms and tell people to go to your website for more. This is very smart for those who maybe put long versions of content on their website or they have their content behind a paywall so when people discover the free or short versions of the content they go to the website and will spend more time there or will purchase the subscription.

Don’t have a website?

Then you need to stop now and get to work on that.

You don’t own your followers on any social media platform so you are losing if any of these social media platforms go away or if they decide to change how their algorithm is designed for their benefit. If you have a website and your content lives there and if people are interested in you then they can always find your content on your site. No one is there to take that away from you. On my website for example the content we have to help with SEO are our artist pages and our blog content. I do not have our social media feeds on our site anywhere and this is probably something that can be added so I’ll be looking into that and you should too. This allows visitors to your site to engage with you directly on your home site without having to go on those social media platforms to find you.
